What are they?
Emulsifiers are surfactants which contain both a hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water fearing) element. Emulsifiers are therefore attracted to both oil and water.
Why do I need one?
You’ll need an emulsifier in your cosmetic product if it contains water and oil. These liquids which famously do not mix together will be bound together by the polyamorous properties of the emulsifier.
Which should I choose?
This very much depends on personal preference and the product you’re intending to create. Some are single emulsifiers whilst some are blends of multiple emulsifying agents. Some will have a creamier texture, some will be soap-like. Some are natural, or naturally derived. You may need to experiment to find the most suitable option that works for your recipe.
Anything else I need to know?
They often contain a fatty alcohol that will enhance the thickening and stabilising properties of the emulsion. In some cases you may want to consider adding extra thickening/stabilising agents alongside your emulsifier.
